hootin'

Friday evening shout out goes to pal Yoon Ki's fiery violin solos while sitting in with the Pine Box Boys at Cafe Du Nord. It was my first time seeing the PBBs who delighted the home-town crowd with their dark humored newgrass-they're just back from a long European tour and seemed no worse for wear... I hadn't seen opener Kemo Sabe's thrash twang in more than a year and noted how tight they've become. They're funny! They're well-choregraphed set-ending dog pile speaks to their sense of humor and attention to detail (how do you not disturb the next band's drum kit and hold a stand-up bass high enough not to impale your bandmate while laying on top of them and their instruments? Given all the cameras, they're probably a YouTube clip somewhere out there)...also much enjoyed catching up with Ed Mattson and Clay Hawkins who have plenty of music and creative projects on their burners. Check 'em all out!

"...The little
worker bee lives, I have read, about three weeks.
Is that long? Long enough, I suppose, to understand
that life is a blessing. I have found them-haven't you?—
stopped in the very cups of the flowers, their wings
a little tattered-so much flying about, to the hive,
then out into the world, then back, and perhaps dancing,..."
