Bay Station (nee KCDC) "Go Out And Make Some" Celebration in Alameda

I'm excited to report that Bay Station (nee KCDC) is getting ready to release Go Out And Make Some, a diverse mix of 11 new Americana songs about love, lust, sandy beaches, dusty roads, wandering holy men, wolf birds and more. Recorded at Lost Monkey Studio in Hayward, CA,  Kwame Copeland and myself co-produced Go Out and Make Some with Mike Stevens, who also served as mixing and recording engineer, and played drums. Andrew Gibson (bass) and Steve Waters (guitar, backing vocals), round out the band and will all be playing live at the upcoming Bay Area shows. The tunes were mastered by Ken Lee in Oakland, CA, and artist Alicia Buelow designed the CD. We're excited to share it with you!

Bay Area New Music O'Rama: Desira, Garibaldi, Heartache Sisters & The Welcome Matt Debut CDs & Singles This Week

Bay Area musicians are packing a big punch this week as a quartet of local acts celebrate the release of new recording efforts. I've either shared shows with or happily applauded performances by these artists, who represent the full spectrum of songwriterly tendencies and deserve many ears.

Jeff Desira is eagerly anticipating his CD-release party at Amnesia on July 19th, 8pm, for "Weathervane." Produced by Scott Mickelson and mastered by Michael Romanowsk, expect some quality hook-laden tunes. (He'll be part of the Alameda Songwriter's Roundup on July 26).

While I was up playing in Oregon, Katie Garibaldi celebrated the release of her new — and seventh (!) — CD "Follow Your Heart," a collection of pop and country-tinged tunes recorded with great care at Tiny Telephone and featuring the string work of Magik Magik Orchestra

The Heartache Sisters are hard not to love with their multi-instrumentalist cool, sweet harmonies and Americana style. They've just debuted two new singles — Please Be Kind and Living Machine _ which can be found across the Inter webs. I also highly recommend seeing them live if you're in Fresno, Pasadena or Oakland in the coming weeks. Check their tour schedule for a date near you.

I recently interviewed The Welcome Matt about "POP JUNK FLUFF & HYPE," which is packed with memorable lines and is officially released July 16. This music rocks.

Alejandro Escovedo @ Bimbo's 8/16

We got back into town last week in time to catch Alejandro Escovedo's show at Bimbo's in San Francisco on Thursday. I've been a die hard Escovedo fan since seeing him six years ago at Hardly Strictly Bluegrass where I was completely captivated by his live show, which encapsulates his punk roots, sensitive songwriting and rock and roll swagger. At Bimbo's, he and the latest incarnation of his band The Sensitive Boys was especially tight from nonstop touring behind his latest release "Big Station." The CD includes more standout tracks including Sally Was a Cop and San Antonio Rain (video below, albeit  from a recent Austin performance rather than SF). The disc, like his past two "Real Animal" and "Street Songs of Love" was co written with SF's own Chuck Prophet, who came onstage late in the show to sing Always a Friend. That song is usually a rocker, but tonight the band came out from behind their instruments to stand at the lip of the stage and sing accompanied only by hand claps and a bit of percussion. Suddenly the rock and roll band was a boys choir, Escovdeo and Prophet sharing a mic and trading verses to access the sweetness of the song as well as the swagger ("But if I do you wrong, take the master suite, I'll take the floor Sleep in late, get your rest, I'll catch up on mine Still be your lover, baby, oh oh, oh oh, oh oh"). It was truly a special moment. Escovedo, who is from Texas, has deep roots in the Bay Area, having lived here and been on the punk scene in the 70s with his band The Nuns. While I was surprised the venue wasn't sold out (but then again it was a Thursday in SF), it was clear that everyone in the club was a true fan, riveted to the action on stage and singing along as much as possible. I've never not enjoyed Escovedo's bands, which often includes string sections and back up singers, and this one is no exception, and exceptionally fierce (except when they're singing without instruments). Bolstered by the blistering guitar of Billy White (whose got some metal and some flamenco in his blood), these guys simply rock hard. By the end of the evening, with Prophet onstage jamming along on closing numbers including Real Animal and Neil Young's Like a Hurricane the sound was downright ferocious.

India was and is fabulous...and I sure missed playing live when I was away. I'm excited to bring the band back to The Plough & Stars. In SF this Friday, February 10 at 9:30pm. We're opening for The Creak and Kitchen Fire for a night of spirited Americana music. I want to see you there.
