Love the Bay Postcard: Treasure Island

Day 1: Alameda to Treasure Island. Close to home but a world away! The weather turned beautiful, the tide turned our way, and the wind picked up, making for a quick jaunt. We had plenty of time to clean up, load in and set up at TI Bar & Grill to play for a friendly, local crew. Amazing we could fit our gear on board! Amazing sunrise and nice to find a great cafe, Aracely, a twenty-minute walk from the Marina (espresso drinks and fresh kale smoothies). Next stop

Artist Interview: The Assured, Authentic Americana of The Keller Sisters

Since releasing their debut CD Shine in 2013, The Keller Sisters have quickly taken their place at the top of the Americana and Folk Charts and the San Francisco songwriting community for their warm harmonies, keen perspective and sense of humor.  Following up Shine up with 2014's equally assured House of Cards, the success of siblings Sheryl and Kerry is well deserved: They bring an easy grace forged by a strong family bond, and a lifetime of musical experience, to any stage they take.  The two discussed their life in music as they prepared to perform at the American River Music Festival.

Q: Did you have similar tastes growing up? Did you go through any sibling rivalry or rebellion?
KS: We have been singing together as long as we can remember. We shared a room and
our mother dressed us alike so a strong bond was formed early on. We can not remember a time that either one of us was jealous of the other. We still finish each other’s sentences. One of our songs has the line "Two peas in a pod two nuts in one shell"...pretty much sums it up.

Q: How does (or doesn't!) your first teen duo project reflect your current sound?
KS: Back then, we played the music we were listening to: Music rooted in harmony and lyrics with strong melody.  Crosby Stills and Nash, Neil Young, Linda Ronstadt, Joni Mitchell, Simon and Garfunkel and the Beatles. Over the years, we have developed a love for every genre but our music definitely has these early influences.

Q:Can you describe events that led to you forming officially as The Keller Sisters and recording Shine?
KS: Our cover band, Blue Tuesday was playing a lot — local clubs and some festivals — and while it was and is very fun, we started missing the stripped-down sound and the music that we played when we were young. In 2011, we were asked to play a fundraiser and decided to do a few songs, just the two of us.  We played some of the old songs and one original tune. It went well and we really enjoyed it. The first time playing the original song in public was an “Ah Hah” moment and we realized we wanted to do more of that.  After writing more songs, we decided to record them just to have for us and our family. We found a wonderful producer and during the process decided that we would release a CD to have something to share when we played live. It all came together quickly, and we did a residency at a local venue to fine tune the songs and try out new ones. One of our first rehearsals we thought of all kinds of clever names for our duo, then gave up and decided to go with who we are.

Q:  Your mother was a singer and actress and you've been exposed to music for most of your life: Was there ever a time you weren't doing music or wanted to do something else?
KS:  Our mother was a huge influence on us. She had an incredible voice with gorgeous tone and perfect pitch. She moved the family from San Francisco to Los Angeles after our older brother was born. We lived our early lives in Hollywood while she worked in films and did local television. Dad taught the movie stars kids at a private school. His father asked him to join the family insurance business back in SF and the decision was made to come back home. Mom decided that she would go back to her first love which was musical theater. She toured extensively and when she was home was constantly rehearsing. This exposed us to a world of music and wonderful training. We grew up watching her perform and meeting her on tour. We were fortunate to do summer stock with her which was a real education. We both sang in the school Glee Club and did lavish productions in our bedroom.
We worked out all the harmony parts to Beatles songs and aspired to be the next Simon and Garfunkel.  We are having so much fun right now, but those moments where our voices become one still bring us the most joy.

Q: How do you write? Do you write together or individually bring songs to the table?
KS: So far, Sheryl does all of the songwriting. The ideas come from personal experience reading and observing life.  Kerry is the editor and sounding board. When a song is close, we work together on the details and fine-tune, tweaking the melody to highlight the harmonies which is so important to us.

Q:  Who are you listening to or reading now? Any sounds you're especially loving?
KS: We recently saw the amazing Ruthie Foster and had our first Steve Poltz experience. We see as much live music as we can and always come away completely inspired... It is thrilling to discover new music. Currently we are listening to Jason Isbell and Gretchen Peters.

Q: What's next? Anything new audiences can expect at the American River Music Fest in Sept?
KS: We have a collection of new songs and only one of them has been performed live. We will be spending the next few months fine-tuning them and are hoping to record another CD early in 2016. We are so excited to play the American River Music Festival and are looking forward to hearing all of the music... We will surely discover and become fans of someone we have never heard before and what a thrill that is!

KCDC Love the Bay Tour Sept 17-20

Just to keep things interesting, we're going to sail to our next gig! We're often playing instruments while sailing on board our boat Espresso, so we thought we'd make it more formal. September 17-20 we'll be both sailing around the San Francisco Bay, and playing gigs on board and off. Plus we'll be doing Concert Window broadcasts from our various ports.

Saturday: KCDC at The Bazaar Cafe

Saturday, August 8th, 2015

Bazaar Cafe

KCDC Acoustic w/Alex Walsh 7pm-9pm

5927 California St San Francisco, CA 94114

Once upon a time, many years ago ago, I made a weekly visit to The Bazaar Cafe in the Richmond, where songwriters gathered (and still gather) to play their latest songs at the Open Mic. It was a nerve-wracking experience, playing in front of the other songwriters, kind of like an unofficial adult school of songwriting. Plus the Bazaar is unplugged, and acoustic. No PA, no microphone, no nada. I often broke out into cold sweats before and after, but somehow, over time,  I got better at holding it together to play my songs in front of people, and a I met some long-term friends.
A very large percentage of Bay Area songwriters have come through its unassuming doors to play and listen over the years. It has a living room feel and at this point, it would be very interesting to hear what its walls would say if they could talk.
We still play there once or twice a year, and this weekend, we're up, offering an all-acoustic set of KCDC songs from our "Your Own Reaction" CD and new material for our next one. Alex Walsh joins us for a set and to play guitar and we'll have Andrew Gibson on bass.  Plus...there's pie!

Guitar talk: Desio Guitars & The Secret Identities

Last week,  I was privileged to take part in a night of guitars at The Monkey House with a dozen or so other Desio guitar owners. For the past several years now,  local luthier Mario Desio has quietly been building custom guitars for a lucky group of musicians. It was a real treat to see and hear a bunch of these artist-owners discuss and play their very special no-two-alike acoustics. From my little parlor model to baritones and everything in between, it was an inspiring display of artistry and commitment on many levels. Yay Mario!
Mario of course, was a guitar player long before he became a guitar maker, and he'll put aside his luthier orders Friday, September 5, to perform at the CD release for his band The Secret Identities at the Starry Plough. More good music — The Secret Identities are sharing the bill with Shelley Doty X-tet (Shelley's a great guitarist & gifted performer) — and another chance to see Desio guitars in action.

Quick Change: Northwest Shows & Staying Loose

"A flexible spine equals a flexible mind" is an oft-repeated phrase in yoga circles. I believe it. And during weeks likes this, I'm especially glad I've a regular yoga practice. A run of dates in the Northwest have been on the calendar for months, but in the space of a couple of days, my musical accompaniment for part of the trip changed, a show that was the impetus for the tour was postponed, the tour was rerouted through Portland, I added a new date in a town in which I didn't think I'd be playing, and I'm leaving a day early.   Here's to applying to your day-to-day what practice teaches — breathe, focus ...and get out there and rock it! If you're in Oregon and Washington the next few days, come on out to a show.

April's Full: Something Special & Fools

When I lived in Colorado, I learned that one of the most respected professors at CU, Patricia Limerick, a MacArthur fellow who heads up the Center for the American West in Boulder, was also the "University Fool." In her official capacity as fool — a title she proudly holds — she dresses up as a clown each April 1 to act the jester around town and campus, "bringing some levity" to an otherwise serious institution.
Limerick's combination of irreverence and excellence impressed me. While you won't find me in clown makeup today, April Fools' Day, I thought I'd nonetheless join in the spirit of foolishness (or foolhardiness) and share a demo of one of my newer (and quirkier) songs  'Something Special.' About my childhood fascination with the legend of Bigfoot, I wasn't sure this song was going to leave the house after I wrote it. Nonetheless, since I've added 'Something Special' to the set list, it's been finding its legs (err, feet). Plus I've found out a lot of folks are still very interested in Bigfoot! I hope you enjoy it.

Heartbreak Hell in Berkeley

Valentine's Day has always felt a bit like a setup, a lot of pressure whether one is in or out of a relationship.  So I was delighted when songwriter Ira Marlowe put together a night of sad songs by other local troubadours to commemorate this pseudo holiday now associated with romantic love. Plus it's a benefit for Bay Area suicide prevention efforts.
Come take a listen. You'll laugh, you'll cry, you may or may not eat too much chocolate...and you're always welcome to bring flowers:

Read.Eat.Listen: Trophies & Icons

When I was in grade school, my class was shown a cautionary film about extinction (mind you this was Santa Cruz during the 70s). I don't remember much else about the movie other than a scene of mystified children walking through a dusty museum full of taxidermied bears and fox, snakes and raccoons. The children in this movie, set far into the future, didn't recognize the animals, which were known to me and the rest of my class. This really got me. How? Why? What? I liked the fact, growing up in a somewhat rural area, that I knew live animals and their environments to some degree, not just vestiges.  The movie did its job and laid another brick in the foundation of my appreciation of nature. Which is why the implications of the California drought, and then happening upon a seemingly randomly-placed wall full of trophy animals has gotten stuck in my craw of late.
Unbeknownst to me prior to last week, a roadside restaurant along Highway 5 houses a large collection of trophy animals including three polar bears (!), moose heads and pronghorn antelope. We'd stopped for some road food and whatever pie we could find. Upon procuring the latter (in a bit of foreshadowing, a slice of 'Fruits of the Forest' mixed berry pie), we stepped into the cafe/bar side of Granzella's and.. stopped in our tracks: covering the high-ceilinged walls were hundreds of deer, elk and moose heads plus stuffed pheasant, pin-tail ducks and other birds.
'What the.... " We shuddered. Most people in the restaurant weren't evening looking at the stuffed animals.  I flashed on the grade-school movie. I Googled Trophy Animals & the restaurant name to get up to speed. I couldn't really find much other than the collection belonged to the owner of the restaurant. But I did fidd some other, unsettling, information about the practice of trophy hunting from In Defense of Animals.
Some tips from their site:
What you can do:
  • Contact IDA if you are interested in helping to end trophy hunting.
  • Before you vote for a legislative representative, find out if he/she is supportive of trophy hunting, canned hunts or even involved in the killing of “big game” or any exotic animals. If yes, do not vote for this person!
  • Before booking a safari in foreign countries, make sure the outfitting company does not endorse safari hunts and has no ties to any trophy hunting organization such as the Safari Club International and others.

Read: We came home from a gig Monday to the sad news of Pete Seeger's death and my wind down for the evening was reading his obit. Every songwriter, folk or otherwise, has felt the ripple of Seeger's influence. Reading the news reports and the many tributes, I was struck by what I knew but was once again wowed by: his resolute and fearless activism. What a model for us all.  Alec Wilkinson expanded on his New Yorker profile of Seeger to write The Protest Singer: An Intimate Portrait of Pete Seeger.
Eat: On our tour through the Northwest, I was on a quest for the best gluten free bread and found a good representative at Hideaway Bakery in Eugene (note they had a ton of non-GF bread too). Back at home, I've been scratching me head at my options, but have come across some good quick-bread recipes, including this dessert-like one for Date Bread w/Coffee and Ginger from Healthy & Seasonal Recipes. Yum.

Little Bird Tour NW Lands

We woke up in Oregon Tuesday to ice-covered windshields and frozen fog. It was 26 degrees and time to head back home. Cold and gray was the weather flavor of the tour, but we didn't get snow and enjoyed much warmth from the locals during our travels. Special thanks go to Ellen at KSKQ in Ashland for having us on the show, Oberon's for the hospitality and warm cider, Patricia & Scott in Ashland & Gail & John in Corvallis for hosting us, songbird Jean Mann for sharing a bill at the gem of a listening room in Redmond, Soulfood Coffeehouse, Thene at Metronome in Tacoma, the Copeland clan in West Seattle, Willow & the Embers, as well as Tracy at Twilight Gallery. The adventure in touring isn't just in the playing, it's in the people you meet and places you experience. I always return from such trips with my mind expanded. We got home Tuesday afternoon to 75-degree weather, perfect conditions to put ones feet in the sand (we had nothing to do with the stray Christmas tree).

Oberon's mulled wine and hot cider on a freeeeezing night.

Read.Eat.Listen: Pick Me Up

You know the holidays are over when the cat pulls down the Christmas lights and the (living, Norfolk Pine) tree and the house has succumbed to the winter bug of the season. Well then!
Read:  Poetry Foundation. A campaign to 'flood Facebook with poetry' circluating this weekend just as I was being laid low pulled me out of a big wallow. I spent a few happy hours revisiting poets and discovering some new ones.  Here's one from a new-to-me poet Heather Christle.

Pursuits

It is not that you want
to be the one to make prints
in the untrampled snow
It is that you want
to be in the snow
without having touched it
to be of  the snow
not beginning
Everywhere commerce
dictates the shapes
that move you along
that seat you at the table
far from the snow
far from the act
of not touching
It only gets worse
A girl’s gotta eat
And your hunger’s
not even your own

Here’s how to make a basic wellness shot:
  • Juice ½-1 whole lemon
  • Juice 1-inch piece of ginger
  • Add a dash or two of cayenne pepper
Knock it back at the onset of a cold, or just when you feel like a little pick-me-up is in order. You’ll feel the effects fairly quickly. "
