Bay Station "Go Out and Make Some" Tour Recap

I wrapped up the Bay Station Duo Go Out and Make Some Spring Tour with Kwame Copeland a couple days ago. Wowza. Over the past three+ weeks, we drove more than 6000 miles to play 22 shows in 15 states (including two double-days, one radio station, and (at least) one former brothel). We crossed the Mississippi River multiple times, skirted the base of Colorado’s Rocky Mountains, and landed in the Mojave Desert. We ate tacos in New Mexico, hush puppies in Louisiana and fresh fruit pie wherever we could get it. Along the way, we happily gained a sense of the local music scenes in Nashville and San Antonio, connected with fellow touring artists in Dallas and Atlanta, and resumed old friendships in Austin and Chapel Hill. It was great to share our music with new ears, and get that much more inspired. Travel to different corners of the US is simply eye-opening.
Indeed, we experienced a sampler plate of what half the country has to offer: it's good, bad and ugly, red and blue. We were treated with the South's trademark charm while being constantly reminded of its oppressive and violent history. We talked to committed and aggrieved voters in Arizona, played the "only blue county" in Kansas, and were subjected to the gamut of political billboards in Missouri and Texas.
Mostly, we felt very fortunate to have music as our compass through such varied terrain, as it led us toward many warm-hearted and generous souls. I now feel much like I did when I finished a ride on the Big Dipper during childhood summer excursions to the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk: "when can we go again?"
While I figure that out, we’ve a whole bunch of fun shows lined up around the San Francisco Bay Area during the next few weeks. Find my schedule and Bay Station's, at our sites:

KCDC Love the Bay Recap

KCDC completed our inaugural sail and play around the San Francisco Bay/Love the Bay tour experiment with bright sun, warm skies and just enough wind to get us back to Alameda. Thanks to Treasure Island Bar & Grill for hosting us Thursday, our pals Christie & Martin for taking care of us so well in Sausalito, and to those who tuned into our Concert Window broadcasts from Espresso. We learned much about taking gear on a boat, live-streaming and what works and what doesn't for such an expedition, plus had some magic moments around our beautiful Bay (Harbor porpoises! Seals! Osprey! Sunsets!) We hope to do this again in 2016. Stay tuned. In the meantime, we're taking the full band back to High Street Station in Alameda on Saturday, Sept. 26. Real inputs, mics and amplification! Woo-hoo! Please join us.

NW Mini-tour Postcard: Bend, Redmond & Ashland or Bust

Portland is cooler than ever: Here I'm waiting for the free piano seat on Alberta St. to open after enjoying the best gluten-free cinnamon roll from Back to Eden bakery and a fine coffee from Caffe Vita
I'm truly hooked on the open road, big skies, and opportunities to play songs for new people, which is why I set out on hours-long drives even when plans go awry, tech goes wonky and the temperature averages 95 degrees. Some snaps from the latest trip North and back
Big Sky on the way to Bend, Oregon. Bend is beautiful and boasts another good stage in Volcanic Theater Pub

The amazing Horse Tail Falls along the Columbia River. I didn't take a dip but wished I had later.

The dear Sue Quigley who shared the bill with us at the awesome listening room that is SoulFood Coffeehouse in Redmond, Washington

Quick Change: Northwest Shows & Staying Loose

"A flexible spine equals a flexible mind" is an oft-repeated phrase in yoga circles. I believe it. And during weeks likes this, I'm especially glad I've a regular yoga practice. A run of dates in the Northwest have been on the calendar for months, but in the space of a couple of days, my musical accompaniment for part of the trip changed, a show that was the impetus for the tour was postponed, the tour was rerouted through Portland, I added a new date in a town in which I didn't think I'd be playing, and I'm leaving a day early.   Here's to applying to your day-to-day what practice teaches — breathe, focus ...and get out there and rock it! If you're in Oregon and Washington the next few days, come on out to a show.

A List of (Western) Birds: August Road Trip 2012

Jessica Feis photo
I'm a long ways from that college kid who worked summers for the Predatory Bird Research Group helping release Peregrine Falcons back into the wild in The Sierra Nevada. Nonetheless those summers honed my eyes for identifying an eagle or falcon at distance in a glance. So while our Come Ashore adventures didn't include official birding forays, I kept a good pair of binoculars at the ready under the passenger seat as we traveled through two national parks and more national forests and BLM land than I could count. Despite time spent in Yosemite and along the East Side of the Sierra, I did not see a Peregrine this trip. Nonetheless, I was pleased with many of the sightings. Following is a list of birds IDed as we drove, hiked and played our way through California, Nevada, Colorado and Wyoming this August (no real order here albeit vaguely grouped by family):

Crow
Raven
Wild Turkey
Turkey Vulture
Ferruginous hawk
Red Tail hawk
Swainson's Hawk
American Kestral
Bald Eagle
Golden Eagle
Osprey
Great Egret
Great Blue Heron
Magpie
Steller's jay
Scrub Jay
Clark's Nutcracker
Loggerhead Shrike
Western Flycatcher
Western Kingbird
Western Meadowlark
Brewer's Blackbird
Red-winged Blackbird
Common Grackle
Gambols quail
Mourning Dove
Band-tailed pigeon
Cliff Swallow
Rough Winged Swallow
Cave Swallow
Avocet
Spotted Sandpiper
American Pipit
Killdeer
Canada Geese
Mallard
Gadwall
White pelican
 Brown Pelican
Western grebe
Pied bill grebe
Sandhill Crane
Cormorant
Common nighthawk
Brown Towhee
Black-chinned hummingbird
Broad-tailed hummingbird
Robin

Oh the road: tour landing

Music tours, being just that, are first and foremost road trips, albeit with two vehicles: the music itself and the car. While each show we did had it's own flavor, each day was dictated as much by travel conditions. Who would have thunk it would snow in Dallas? And the math of getting from point A to B, carefully calculated before leaving, takes on a different cast when you're in real time. In 15 days we had one day off from music, which fortuitously allowed us to split a particularly long day in half and stay with friends along the route. Still, the tight schedule found us in the car for more than 10 hours each day on the last two days of the trip, en route from Santa Fe to Vegas, Vegas to San Francisco. Truth be told as much as I like traveling, —moving through the ever-changing Southwest landscape is half the draw—I was a little heartbroken to spend such small amounts of time in Santa Fe and even Vegas. I once spent a fair amount of time in New Mexico and the whys of that all came flooding back to me surrounded by sage and pinon and desert mountains and those bright bright stars at night. Plus everyone there, from venue owner to audience member to cafe worker was immensely friendly. Likewise I could have spent a bit more time amid the wacky skyline, rife with neon and flashing signs, the desert air and the surrounding mountains that is Vegas. Nonetheless, after moving through the Mojave, up and over the Tehachapi Pass which was blazing with spring wildflowers, we arrived in the Bay Area to wrap up the tour in Sunnyvale with Indian Food, bandmates and the music. And after 10+hours of SLEEP, I'm happy to see that spring has arrived here as well.

Great Idea Tour continued: Amarillo, Santa Fe, Vegas....Sunnyvale

Old friends, new friends, many miles, crazy road sitings, snow (!), roadside 'salad bar,' and now, Las Vegas. Jury is out on what 14 days on the road have done to my brain! If you're in California, please come find out: Friday, March 26th, 2010
